When meeting people for the first time, or reconnecting after a while, one of the first questions you are often asked is what do you do? Do you have kids? What do they do?
This past week I caught a sermon that discussed this very topic.
When asked what I do, my response is nothing. I do nothing. Well, that certainly is not true. There is rarely a minute on any given day that I do nothing. What I mean when I say nothing is that I do not work a traditional job outside of the home.
As I ponder that second question, what do my kids do, further the Spirit gave me the answer, clear as the beautiful blue sky. My boys make the world a better place. They are fierce friends. They sacrifice to make others feel accepted and loved. They have such compassion that the light of Jesus shines through them, even when they do not realize it. They are doing what we are all called to do. Loving others as Jesus loves us. I have two amazing boys that have grown into two amazing men, and I am so proud of who they are.
But when asked those questions, I feel I need to defend why I am not working and why my kids are not doctors or lawyers. I am not ashamed of my boys or that I stay out of the workforce to care for others. It does not matter what occupation we have, that does not define who we are, jobs just pay the bills. It is so sad how what we do has come to represent our value as people in society.
We are not measured by our bank accounts or what job we perform. Remember that we are measured by our fruit. The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). When you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, healthy fruit is a byproduct of His love moving through you. It becomes who you are.
Life has not been without struggle, but loving and caring for others has always been part of who I am, and it is such a blessing to see that in my children. I am blessed to be able to devote my time to sharing the love of Jesus with others through this devotional, it is a calling on my life that I am honored to answer.
My prayer for you, my reader, is that you will feel the Lord’s presence through the bits of my life I share. We are called to be in community, and I am honored to have you as part of mine.
God Bless –
Your Friend, Rho
